I
The Earth will become a wicked stepmother
If your soul sells my soul.
Waters carry a chill of tribulation.
The world has become more splendid
since you made inc your ally in love,
when beside a hawthorn
we remained without words:
and love, like the thorny tree,
pierced us with
fragrance.
But the Earth will make your body
bloom with snakes
if you sell my soul.
I will crush these desolate knees
that hold no child.
The radiant Christ within my heart
will be extinguished;
the hand of the homeless wanderer
will be broken
and the anguished woman will be
driven from the door of my house.
II
The kiss you give to another
will reach my ears
because deep caverns return
your words to me.
The dust of roadways
guards the scent of your footsteps.
Like a deer, I will follow them
Through the mountains.
Above my house,
the clouds will paint the image
of the one you adore.
Thief! You will have to hide
to kiss her in the bowels of the Earth,
and when you lift her face,
you will see my face, wet with tears.
III
God does not desire sun in your life
if you do not walk with me.
God does not want you to enjoy refreshment
if I (10 not
tremble in your waters.
He only wants you to sleep
next to my gathered braids.
IV
If you go away,
you will
trample my soul,
even in the moss upon the road.
Thirst and hunger
will sink their teeth into you
on every mountain or plain,
and in every country
bloody afternoons will display my wounds.
And my name will fall in drops
from your tongue although you speak
the lame of another woman,
and in your throat, I will nail myself,
a briny vestige.
And when you hate or sing or worry,
you will only clamor for me!
V
If you go away from me
and perish in a distant land,
your cupped hand
will receive my tears
for ten years under the earth.
You will feel how my miserable flesh
trembles for you
until my bones shatter and spread
their dust over your face.
