THE USELESS VIGIL

I forgot that your light foot

was transformed into ashes,

and, as during good times,

I ventured to find you

along the path.

I passed through valley,

plain and river;

songs filled me with melancholy.

Afternoon faded,

tumbled its luminous vase.

And you didn't appear!

The sun crumbled its poppy,

charred and lifeless.

A foggy fringe trembled

over the flelds.

I was alone'.

From a tree,

a whitened branch like an arm,

rustled in the autumn wind.

I was terrified and cried out to you,

“My love, hurry to my side?."

“I hold fear

and I hold onto love.

My love, speed your journey!"

Night thickened around me;

my madness grew.

I forgot--they made you deaf

to my lament;

your deadly dawn,

your heavy hand,

too late, its quest for my hand,

and your wide eyes,

a sovereign inquisition!

Night extended

its bituminous-black pool;

The owl of mystic fortune

fretted the path

with the macabre silk

of its wings.

I will not call out to you again;

your journey has ended.

My naked foot continues its trek;

your foot remains eternally quiet.

In vain I hold this vigil

along deserted roads.

Your ghost will not come together

in my open arms!
